Welcome to Responses to the Landscape, a project which records the responses of a range of people to the landscapes of North Devon. These take the form of music, poems and general narratives.
The project is a joint initiative between The Ariel Studios (Channel Arts) and North Devon Museums Service, and is funded by the North Devon Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty through their Countryside Agency Project Funding 2005-2006
Local poet Sam Smith recites his poetry inspired by Ilfracombe, folk artist Chris Millington creates a musical response to Rappery Bay and naturalist, Trevor Beer, provides his thoughts on North Devon.
The Mortehoe shepherd, David Kennard, talks about his special place Morte Point, geologist Kester Webb imparts his knowledge of Combe Martin, and Recyc (a North Devon Young Peoples Junk Band) describe The River Taw through sound.
You can access their individual recordings by selecting Contributors from the navigation menu, or you can select the recordings by location from a Sound Map of North Devon's Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). There are also more detailed map Tours of Combe Martin, Ilfracombe and Mortehoe/Morte Point
The sound recordings and maps are available for downloading (zip files) and we encourage you to do so and visit the locations shown on the maps and play them there. The sound clips are in mp3 format so that they can be played on a portable mp3 player or iPod. The maps are in pdf file format.
There is also an Image Gallery showing pictures of the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. All pictures are supplied by courtesy of the North Devon AONB and may not be reproduced, copied, loaned or otherwise utilised without prior written consent of the North Devon AONB Manager.
To listen to the sound clips on this site you will need an audio player. If you do not already have one installed on your PC, you can download one by visiting our Download Center - accessible using the link at the top right corner of each page.
Enjoy the Responses to the Landscape!
